Adventures in Up-cycling

Here we have the big reveal of how we spent much of our Christmas break. Are you ready for this? It’s pretty rad.

It all started a few days before Thanksgiving, when our old box TV broke. Poor, sad, outdated TV. No worries though, cuz we scored a new one on black Friday (never doing that again, it was a pain). A nice, new, thin, flat screen TV!

Enter new, sleek, sexy TV stand to go with new, skinny, beautiful TV. And then we had this problem. Hmmm, what to do with our giant old entertainment center?

ImageMind you, we picked this thing up for free on the side of the road a couple summers back. We were thrilled to have something besides an end table to put our TV on. But you know, it was just so . . . big. Bulky. Outdated. Hideous.

We came up with a few options and then decided on one we both liked. Or rather, two.

We cut it in half. That’s right. We sawed furniture in half. When was the last time you were allowed to do that?!

Then we sanded the whole thing. Well . . . most of it. And by we, I actually more mean just Terry. :)

Then we painted the top half and voila! Turned it into a much needed desk! Behold!

Then we spent another entire day (thank you Netflix for keeping us company) meticulously taping and painting the bottom half, which we turned into something-I-don’t-even-have-a-name-for-but-that-looks-totally-rad. We put it at the foot of our bed and we LOVE it. Besides looking awesome it’s just nice to have a piece of furniture in our room besides our bed. Check it out:

ImageSo cool, right?! It makes me smile every time I see it. So much more awesome than turning our entertainment center into a play kitchenette. Because . . . you know, I sort of already have a kitchen. A real one.

What do you guys think?! We had a blast making both pieces and are enjoying having them in our home. Now if only we could get a nightstand or two . . .
